The first LONG drive of 16336

*Special thanks to Ozzie and Brian for a great morning!*

Sunday, November 29, 2009

I have never really put the car on a long drive. The furthest it has gone has been to Hollywood to my mom's condo via surface streets. I have never fully highway'd the car for a long period of time or for a long distance.

Ozzie had called me to see if i was interested in pushing my luck...haha. Since he had done some work on his car, and his son was down from college, why not see what would happen? At least with another driver with me, if anything had happened, I would not be too worried.

Brian came in driving his Mk II Supra, and Ozzie came with his car:

Brian's AMAZINGLY clean Mk II. You can really see how low my car is. PERFECT.

Probably my favorite picture. Not one hiccup, not one issue. All in all, we drove for about 45 minutes straight, really stretching the legs of the cars. Brian's Supra was surprisingly quick, because I can see who he inherited his lead foot from! haha!

This was a GREAT morning for a drive! Very fun, great weather, and good friends. That's exactly what I did.

I was contacted by a guy off of facebook asking if I was interested in buying some DeLo parts for cheap. Sure! Why the hell not? I asked him what he had, and literally he had MOST of what I needed.

When asking what he wanted for the parts, he told me he was in dire need of a decent laptop. PERFECT! I have a laptop that was only a few months old that I really wasn't using as much as I thought I would be, so what better way to get parts?!? I selected the following parts:

- 140 mph speedo
- battery tie down strap
- aftermarket steering wheel collar
- all new side marker lenses
- hood emblem
- grille emblem
- black DMCH seat covers (new)
- NEW black DMC dash
- NEW ORIGINAL binnacle- black
- L and R door escucheons
- Ashtray
- DMC shirts
- NEW mirror switch
- Driver's side metal door handle
- DMC Banner/flag
- issues of DeLoreans magazine
- Aftermarket steering wheel
- Engine cover hinges
- Interior lights
- Glove box lid
- Rearview mirror

...and some other miscellaneous items.

I drove up to Orlando to scout schools, and while on the trip, headed to pick up the parts. The transaction was very smooth, and he took me to his warehouse to get the stuff. He said he got most of this stuff from an owner when he sold his car. The parts came with the car he was picking up. Pretty awesome score for me!

This really kept purchasing costs down.

I purchased the following:

1. dwell meter from Sears for $20.93
2. Long allen wrench set from Sears $12.99

total for that trip to sears: $33.92

Harbor freight has become my new Sunday morning cruise spot. Even if i dont buy anything, I like to just go walk around. Ozzie has been joining me lately, so company is always good!

Michael D. Yes, it has been an entire three months since my last update. i will try to do better, but I am also a full time student as well as holding down a full-time job, so taking the time to write out everything kinda takes a back seat.

So, with that being said, I will update the blog this weekend with all new pics, stories, and budget updates.

Michael D. Please? Pretty Please? Bad Alternator Replacement!

I will be the first to say that I love the vendors. Sure, they offer some amazing products and such, but sometimes I like thinking outside the box.

Lets take a look at alternators.

DMCH and SpecialTAuto (or deloreanautoparts.com) both have alternators. Both will set you back a few bucks, but both have controversy following them, depending on if you want a super-overpowered model that has a record of failing, or if you want a direct bolt in replacement.

After doing some homework, I found that it is VERY possible to take an off the shelf alternator and install it into my car.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveMfOnHEmI/AAAAAAAAAIc/AJuD27tS7oA/s320/8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401940746180170338" />
I spoke to a forum member, and ended up securing an alternator for a 1994 Chevy Lumina for $100.00 with a lifetime replacement warranty. That is great, because once installed, I can simply unplug it and swap it for a new one without any shipping or waiting! Since i'm planning on driving this car, it also makes it possible to replace it on the road, as long as there is an auto parts store. Note the serpentine pulley. You WILL need to swap your stock pulley.

First, I secured the alternator at Autozone (Part Number: DL1387-6-3.

The next item that had to be purchased was the pigtail connector to allow plug and play connecting.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveKXePMdvI/AAAAAAAAAIE/Q8thXRasd5A/s320/8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401938413912618738" />

I found this connector (part number 30707 if you order from Autozone.com)on ebay for $13.00 shipped! Sweet! I believe I found it using the same part number, because it is the number from Painless Wiring. It is a two wire hook-up, which you will need. I will explain it as I go on.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveLC4dkiFI/AAAAAAAAAIM/F1uZTtyZV1E/s320/DSCF1722.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401939159686613074" />

This is the stock Motorola alternator. The reason I replaced it was because i could hear the bearings squealing as it turned. A sure sign that failure was about to happen.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveLuT5GYnI/AAAAAAAAAIU/aOPRNL3hTk4/s320/DSCF1723.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401939905784210034" /> I strongly suggest having a second person help you. You CAN do this with one person, but sometimes it saves time from going from under the car to above the car... and vice versa... This is my friend Vic learning the ropes of D maintenance.

Before we get going, lets get our tools ready:
1. Socket set with box-end wrenches
2. Needle nose pliars (always a good idea!)
3. RED locktite
4. (optional) air ratchet
5. Soldering iron with solder
6. Shrink wrap
7. Impact gun with impact sockets
8. Dremel with cut-off wheel (or a good hacksaw)

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveNJewwZbI/AAAAAAAAAIk/2cc592N02TU/s320/DSCF1725.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401941472070100402" /> I tried to undo the electrical connections from the stock alternator first, but that failed due to corosion, and the fact the post was free spinning with every turn of the ratchet. I instead dropped the alternator so I could attack it easier. Finally the corosion broke loose and I was able to remove all electrical connections.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveNy9JSjiI/AAAAAAAAAIs/WIIxgG2-zwo/s320/DSCF1729.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401942184600702498" /> Here is a side by side comparison of the two alternators. The mount on the new one will have to be cut down slightly. I highly suggest a dremel with a cut off wheel, or a very good hacksaw.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SvePF6paOxI/AAAAAAAAAI0/IMOnZ_1Tcpk/s320/DSCF1731.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401943609859259154" /> After you lay the two alternators side by side and measure how much of the new alternator you need to cut down, mark the area off with either a marker or some tape. I used blue painter's tape because it is VERY visible. Wearing proper eye protection (flying shards of aluminum are no fun...) Cut through the extra piece off the new alternator.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SvePp407qWI/AAAAAAAAAI8/bm5bAk6QmII/s320/DSCF1733.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401944227846007138" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveQKFSFDVI/AAAAAAAAAJE/RKAjNlBtenQ/s320/DSCF1736.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401944780945296722" /> Now, you can see the aftermath of the cut down: The removed portion that I cut off is in my hand.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveQYYgvQvI/AAAAAAAAAJM/aS9odHNSMec/s320/DSCF1738.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401945026625225458" /> The little nub at the lower left corner is easily removed by the cut off wheel. Takes less than 10 seconds to grind down, but you can see the results of the cutting. VERY easy to do.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveRPAGllLI/AAAAAAAAAJU/rDwQMuoJpHk/s320/DSCF1739.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401945964965893298" /> Now, grab your impact gun and impact sockets and zap the V-pulley off of the original alternator, and zap the serpentine pulley (comes with a spacer and washer, btw...)off of each. To stop the pulley from free spinning, gently put a screw driver in between a fan blade and into the housing, then pull your trigger!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveR7HAgtqI/AAAAAAAAAJc/ZIxSXN0JYqs/s320/DSCF1740.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401946722733700770" /> VERY important: See that little spacer to the left of the pulley? Well, place that BEHIND your new fan. Reason? When you tighten the nut, you will put force on the fan, causing it to flex into the housing. With the spacer there, you can torque it down alot further. Install your old V pulley, washer, and nut. Before zipping it down, add the Lock-Tite! You'll thank me later...

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveSreKKJdI/AAAAAAAAAJk/c3F8BV6thQ8/s320/DSCF1743.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401947553581901266" /> Here is a picture of the final product. Feel free to pull off the tape now... You will notice the NEW alternator does not have a rear bracket like the stock Motorola unit. If you notice your car's alternator mount, the part of the bracket your bolt goes though is significant, so don't worry.

Now, you have to solder in your connector. VERY easy to do. First, the white wire gets attached to the single brown wire that was attached to the back of your old alternator. This goes to your battery light. The second wire on your pigtail is red with a little loop on it. Simply attach this loop onto the post on the alternator that you are attaching your wiring bundle to. Shrink wrap, and plug into your alternator! When you route your wires, make sure you are away from the exhaust manifold!!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveTbpVbt9I/AAAAAAAAAJs/fSUuoVfiqIQ/s320/DSCF1744.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401948381215700946" /> If you cut your alternator properly, it will line up PERFECTLY! Now, tension your belt so that you get 1" of flex with moderate pressure, and TEST!
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveTx2fXNOI/AAAAAAAAAJ0/IpNAaQZ7oIo/s320/DSCF1745.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401948762704131298" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SveT6ZFT3GI/AAAAAAAAAJ8/epfHk5Dqlhc/s320/DSCF1746.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401948909429054562" /> Yep, my voltage gauge is now showing an actual charge! BTW, my gauge is all screwed up. I will explain the issue with that in a future installment of the blog.

That's all there is to this upgrade. I can now replace my alternator ANYWHERE, including a junk yard, if i have to!

A very special thanks to:
- dmcman73 (steve) from DMCTalk.com for his great write up and instructions, plus for answering all my questions on the swap.
- Joe and Missy for loaning me their garage to do this on a very hot Saturday morning.
- Vic for being the second pair of hands.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://deloreanrestore.blogspot.com/2009/11/chaaaarge-please-pretty-please-bad.html' title='Chaaaarge! Like I said earlier, I have very little time to do these updates, and have been piling them up.

May, June, and July were EXTREMELY wet months in Fort Lauderdale. We went literally through almost 3 solid weeks of rain. After that, we hit our standard rain pattern of midday torrential downpours and heavy lightning. This is great for our drought situation, but horrible for the owner of a DeLo that has bad weather seals!!! This is the main cause for the state the interior was in when the car was purchased.

I could tell from day 1 that the windshield has to be addressed, because the A-pillar pieces are all pulled away, and i can see humidity build up from there. After a rain storm, I can see visible signs of fresh water, so therefore, the glass MUST be pulled and resealed. I will probably take this to DMCF to have it done.

Here are the general interior shots. Please note that I had not really done anything to this car as of this point. I had mostly concentrated on the running aspect of it. Alot of these electrical compartment pics were taken the day after the car was brought home, so sorry they are a little late getting posted. These are pics of what the car was like after coming off the trailer:

<img style="cursor:pointer; At this point we found out the hard way that there are no brakes!

I made a post on the forum about the brake issue and proceeded to make a parts order. With my first order, I purchased the following:

1. DMCH correctly proportioned brake master cylinder

2. Inner door seals, right and left side

3. Trunk gasket

4. Fuel filler hose closing panel

5. Shifter boot

One of the best surprises was my bro Mike sent me the new fuse box and relay update kit as a "car warming" gift. How bad ass was that?

The good news is I have a plethora of parts still in boxes from other car projects. I will keep a running tab of costs also.

I was also able to score three pre-owned parts from James at DMCH for a nice discount:

6. Used steering wheel

7. Used driver's side mirror.

8. Used fuse box cover

Being the awesome adventurer that I am, one cloudy afternoon Vic and I decided to take the no brake delorean for a test spin around the parking lot. Now, this is the first time this car has moved under its own power. Thankfully the E-brake works, so I was able to force stops. I don't recommend doing that, but we had alot of open area and decided that we were bored enough to be stupid.

But, eventually I wanted to get into the car and drive it. Early one Sunday, I decided to replace the master cylinder.

This is the factory master. In order to remove, use a set of FLARE NUT WRENCHES! If you try to use a standard wrench, you will succeed not in removing the lines, but in stripping the fitting, and being screwed. Right tool for the right job!

After both lines are removed and gently separated from the old master (beware of dripping brake fluid! Get some rags and place below in order to prevent dripping on painted surfaces!!!), you must remove the two bolts holding the old master cylinder in place. Do so with a ratchet with an extension and a socket.

You may have to do a bit of a wiggle to separate the old master and reservoir from the brake booster, so be gentle!

This is the brake booster (or servo if you wish) without the master. make sure you clean up the surface before installing the new master!

The old reservoir is held in place by two small cotter pins and two rods. Remove the cotter pins, slide out the rods, and gently pull up on the reservoir, being careful not to get any nasty old brake fluid on you. After separating, reinstall the reservoir onto the NEW master cylinder in the reverse order. This is a good time to CLEAN the old part before reinstalling!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/Ssgt5kGPLQI/AAAAAAAAAD0/M3BQVw3N68s/s320/DSCF1517.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388607421114428674" />
Now don't let this fool you, the part WAS cleaned before reinstalling.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SsguJw9G0zI/AAAAAAAAAD8/8uHVwa0VzNU/s320/DSCF1518.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388607699443700530" />
The DEEP end of the reservoir goes closest to the brake booster. Just a reference, in case you didnt know.

Now, at this point, do NOT install the new assembly into the car. Instead, bench bleed the new master cylinder. If you need directions on what bench bleeding is, Google and Wikipedia are your friend! It's basically a way to make sure you have primed the part to ensure proper fluid flow instead of huge pockets of air.

To install the part, do so in reverse order of the removal!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/Ssguy1rBGuI/AAAAAAAAAEE/AHvWsznVCec/s320/DSCF1514.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388608405084642018" />
This will be the extent of my work on the car until Fall. I live in Fort Lauderdale, and it is WAY too hot and humid to work on the car. Instead, I will be going through parts and pulling some stuff out of storage to see what I need.

Michael D. I have a journal that I keep of the car on paper, so I will transfer that onto this site, making it much more permananent.

I made a list back on June 23rd of everything noticeable that the car needed. This is, of course, a work in progress, so I will continue to update it as time goes on.

This is not only a "to buy" list, but also includes the act of installation, because anyone can just BUY parts... eventually you have to take the time to install them too! This car is seriously a work in progress. It will remain so for a LONG time, as I am also making sure I do the smart thing and still put money into my savings account instead of just blowing every cent on car parts.

So, here is my June 23rd list of "what my car needs in order for me to feel warm and fuzzy."

"The List"
1. He had quite a bit on his hand, as the car had been previously sitting in someone's back yard for quite some time. Attached are pics from his files when he first purchased the car:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SiSnkhNkPtI/AAAAAAAAAAM/0Z-7oRUhXjk/s320/DeLorean+Found+James.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342579303800651474" /> <img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SiSn09TTs0I/AAAAAAAAAAU/wNpNZQXLzZU/s320/IMG_2869.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5342579586218832706" />

Needless to say, it needed work. The p.o. was able to do quite a bit in the time he had it. Not only did he get the car to run, but he was able to redo the entire fuel system, flush out the brake system, and replace quite a few parts.

Getting the car home itself was quite an ordeal. Originally, I had intended to film the entire day, but due to headaches and frustrations, that quickly fell by the wayside. Instead, I only captured a few pictures.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SsgiCS9DXvI/AAAAAAAAABU/rBkPytpNG2k/s320/100.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388594376991792882" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SsghbrXGrII/AAAAAAAAABE/ZhxlJaSJ_tA/s320/101.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388593713528614018" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/SsghprpFGNI/AAAAAAAAABM/2KUhEf8WoSs/s320/102.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388593954122176722" />

These were taken in south florida right before I offloaded the car. Since I didnt get the car unloaded until late, I had to wait to fully document the car. The car was stored outside, which shouldn't affect a car in any way, but because of the DeLorean's AWESOME open vented engine bay design, rain, dust, dirt, spiders, monkey's, volkswagens, etc... can all just land in that engine bay and make it dirty.

Here is a pic after a quick bath.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/Ssgkaz1zInI/AAAAAAAAADE/Az62HZIUS80/s320/003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388596997159854706" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ebNssoKPSqY/Ssgkae0kUKI/AAAAAAAAAC8/EuasyG2P1IE/s320/002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388596991517544610" />

Michael D. The rules for a successful hunt

The number one thing we hear at DMCTalk.com is: "Im going to buy a DeLorean in 6 months... what should I look for?"

Not that I doubt EVERYONE, but the majority of people are not going to buy the car in 6 months. However, people DO need to know what they are looking for when buying a DeLorean.

First things first. You honestly need to know what you are buying. Forget Back to the Future, forget what you have in your head. You will NOT be able to time travel, you will not be fast, you will not be on the same level as a Lamborghini. You WILL, however, own a very unique car that is, for the most part, easy to maintain and fun to enjoy.

The car is old. It is from a generation before cell phones, compact disks, and Croc's. You have to remember, when the DeLorean was designed, men were still wearing something called 'Leisure suits' and Disco wasn't completely dead yet. You are not going to be driving a car that's like anything that's in a showroom. Remember, technology has come a VERY long way. You also don't have power steering, your radio sounds like your speakers are sitting in a coffee can, and give up any dreams of hanging your arm outside the window. Also:

- 130 HP. Most base Corollas are closer to 158bhp. This may not sound like a huge difference, but remember, the car is under powered by todays standards. I don't care about 1981 standards, because it's not 1981.

- Power Steering? Nope.

- Power seats? Nope.

- Plywood? Strangely, yes. Some parts are formed with plywood... Oddly enough, i've found duct tape holding wires to the pontoon before. Weird.

- Want bigger rims? Hope you like 4 lug patterns.... most of those rim options suck.

There are also positives, though. I mean, most people looking into the car have some kind of connection in some way to and ideal or dream of owning the car.

- It is unique. It's a great way of driving something different that is relatively affordable.

- When it works, it works well.

- You will meet some great people.

- It runs on regular unleaded.

- Upkeep is not that bad.

- You'll be the coolest guy at a Sci-fi convention

Don't make the car out to be more than it is. You will never be faster than the next guy, so just enjoy it as an opportunity to enjoy a leisurely drive.

You want to look for a car that someone is familiar with. When you know the person you are buying a car from, or know people who know your soon to be new car, it will be better than just randomly choosing a mystery car that has not run in years.

AVOID: Cars that have not been driven for years. This is a telltale sign of an issue. Fuel systems on these cars are sensitive. They do not like old gas, they do not run well with stale gas. Chances are that car that was started up every weekend really wasn't. The car sat, and they are selling it because they tried to fire it up and now the injectors are FUBAR'd.

DO: Buy a car with some documentation. If you purchase a car from a member of the DeLorean community, chances are people will vouch for it. People can tell you how it runs, or give suggestions on what it needs. Cars that are documented on such sites as www.dmctalk.com or www.dmcnews.com are great because you can see work previously done before that owner was set on selling. It's like a time capsule and you can find out alot of what you may have to correct.

AVOID: Rusty frames. Sure, you can get it cheap, and it's only a little rust, right? Chances are there is more rust under that epoxy. You are only seeing what has bubbled out. Bad frame = $$$$. You can't just paint over it, you need to fix it properly. Surface rust is not the same as rot. If you are not willing to take the time to do this properly and invest the time and money to do so, you will get frustrated that you can not safely drive your car.

AVOID: Too good to be true cars. EVERYTHING REPLACED! Must Sell! $6,000 obo! Yeah, that's a scam. As stated, if you don't know anything about DeLoreans, you should ASK FOR HELP. Go onto the forums and see if someone will go with you to look at a car. I have personally done it twice before, and if you are serious, i'll do it again.

I hope this doesn't discourage anyone. You have to know that there are ways to make sure you do not get ripped off, and to make sure you pay a decent price for a decent car. Cars that have been sitting for 10 years without updating or constant maintenance are NOT worth book value. The value of the car actually goes DOWN for an unrestored car because of the amount of work it takes to bring the car to a safe standard. It's very true.

I still go by the numbers that were set as a precedence back in 2000. With the economy floundering, I find the numbers to hold true. What do you get for 10-15k? A candidate for a restoration. 15-19k? A car that can be restored to use as a daily, and a good candidate for the next stage. 20-29k? A damn nice car that you should be able to drive anywhere, wash, and take to your favorite car show.
What do you get for 30k-42k? In my honest opinion, you got ripped off. Unless you are striving to have a PERFECT car, there are alot of great candidates around for alot less money.

I hope you enjoyed my light hearted look at rules everyone should follow when buying a DeLorean. Now we will get to my car.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://deloreanrestore.blogspot.com/2009/05/so-you-want-to-buy-delorean-rules-for.html' title='So You Want to Buy a DeLorean? I hope you enjoy my colorful look into the world of DeLorean restoration, maintenance, and enjoyment. Sounds easy? Well, maybe yes, and maybe no...

First, the formalities. My name is Mike, and I am from Fort Lauderdale, FL. I first became interested in DeLoreans starting at about 1984. My neighbor had a friend come over in his shiny silver car. When I saw the doors go up, I was hooked. I had no idea what the car was, how much they cost, nor did I care. At that age, all i knew is it was shiny, and I wanted one.

Of course, being a child who grew up in the 80's, I ran into a little movie called "Back to the Future". That was it... no matter how hard I tried, I would get one of these strange cars.

As a kid, my parents really gave me every toy that was car related. Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Majorette, it didn't matter. It was only inevitable that I would follow through with owning one. I even remember saving pennies that I'd find in the street in a giant jar to afford my car when I was older!

I read books, learned mechanics, and tried to meet every DeLorean owner I could. It became alot easier with the internet. I hooked up with an owner in Davie that really didnt care about me hanging around. He was going through a rough patch and was pretty tired of the car. I pretty much begged him to let me give him some money every month, and give me the car when it was paid off. Not bad... it was an 82, automatic, and in ok condition. Hey, I was desperate.
I got to take the car out a few times, and thought it was cool--for a slow car. I was sure that the deal was sealed, so I started telling people about my DeLorean.
Life Lesson: Never speak of owning something fully until it is fully yours. After a year, his wife wanted it gone, they refunded my money, and the car was outa here. My short lived first project went bye bye.

Years later, with more knowledge under my belt, my friend Mike bought 6720. With that car, alot more jobs were learned and we had the chance to meet some great people. We, along with our friend Brandon, started what is now The DeLorean Club of Florida, which now not only helps other owners learn about their cars, but we give enthusiasts a new place to learn, and we take part in the yearly Celebration Exotic Car Festival which benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation. For two years, Brandon and I have been concourse judges at this event. We welcome ANY DeLorean owner or enthusiast, and invite people to come out to every event, even in their daily driver. It's all about getting people with similar interests together to have a laid back good time.

I hope you enjoy the blog, and I hope you learn something along the way.

-Mike

Michael D.
